Last years, the Government introduced The Green Homes Grant to help get contractors and builders back to work along with stimulating the uptake of energy efficient measures in people’s homes. The grant is offered in the form of a voucher, to be used as a contribution of up to £5000 by Homeowners and landlords to make energy-efficient improvements to homes including insulation.
ITV News has recently reported on many cases of people living in ‘inhabitable’ homes due to mould. There are multiple reasons why mould can grow, but insulation is one of the most effective ways to prevent mould growth.
How does the Green Homes Grant work?
The Green Homes Grant offered vouchers to cover costs up to two-thirds of the chosen improvement.
Improvements were split into ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ measures. The voucher must be used to install at least 1 primary measure, which includes a range of insulation solutions, and secondary measure such as windows, doors and draught proofing.
Disadvantages of the Green Homes Grant
The Green Homes Grant started in September 2020 but finished in March 2021. The grant failed to get off the ground, with Greenpeace UK describing the rollout of the Green Homes Grant as “shambolic”. It’s been reported this is likely due to the pandemic, such as cheques sent to installers so late they went out of business, and the difficulty for applicants to be accepted for the grant.
While the Green Homes Grant wasn’t successful, it has yet to be replaced by a different scheme.
